Overt Hepatic Encephalopathy Explanation

Recognizing Hepatic Encephalopathy

Before knowing the meaning of overt hepatic encephalopathy and covert hepatic encephalopathy, let’s we talk about hepatic encephalopathy first. Hepatic encephalopathy commonly called as HE. It is a condition refers to personality change, mental condition, and nervous system in people who suffer liver disease.

HE can be caused by various factors. The common cause of HE is high ammonia level on blood vessel and brain. Bacteria in stomach and intestine produce ammonia. Liver usually metabolism ammonia (make it becomes not dangerous). But, people with liver disease produce much ammonia because their liver doesn’t work. Finally, ammonia enters blood, stream to brain, and then causes symptoms and disturbs the brain function. If HE patient doesn’t get treatment, it will cause coma and death.

There are so many symptoms of HE, such as senility, moody, tiredness, amnesia, and comma. Other symptoms of HE are jaundice, difficulty speaking, trembling, irritability and uncontrolled movements. People with HE can also have liver disease symptoms such as breast enlargement, fluid in stomach, and swollen foot.

When your family member has the symptoms mentioned before, you have to bring your family member to a doctor as soon as possible. Why? It is because HE is so dangerous. As mentioned before, HE will make a patient can’t control behavior, it can also cause comma. So, consultation with a doctor should be done as soon as possible to avoid bad risk of HE. Before HE causes coma or death, a patient should get best treatment.

There are some factors that increase HE risk, such as dehydration, consume too much protein, bleeding on intestine, stomach and esophagus, infection, kidney problem, low oxygen level on the body, and the consumption of medicine that pressure central nerve system.

Covert Hepatic Encephalopathy (CHE) and Overt Hepatic Encephalopathy (OHE)

As mentioned above, HE can be divided into two types. The first type of HE is Covert Hepatic Encephalopathy or CHE, and the second type is Overt Hepatic Encephalopathy or OHE. CHE will influence human’s life because gives dominan or big impact to a patient’s life, and it has been associated with increased rates of hospitalization on the death. It also gives a significant impact to driving performance. So, people with CHE should avoid driving because driving is dangerous for CHE patient.

How about Overt Hepatic Encephalopathy (OHE)? Same with CHE, OHE is also associated with increased hospitalization and mortality. It also causes poor quality of life. We can conclude that CHE and OHE give significant impact to patient’s life. So, the best way to handle it is giving treatment to HE patient. A medicine that usually used for solving HE is lactulose.
